SAFEGUARDING 0-25 YEAR OLDS WITH COMMUNICATION NEEDS – A CASE SCENARIO

14:00 – 15:00

Research shows that children and young people with communication needs are especially vulnerable to abuse and neglect, but are less likely to be subject to child protection plans. This session will use a case scenario to help social workers feel more confident in identifying and addressing safeguarding concerns, with a particular focus on a rights-based approach and children and young people with speech, language and communication needs such as autism spectrum disorders. It will cover:

  • Identifying the signs of possible maltreatment in the complex context of families under strain
  • How to meet children and young people’s communication needs during safeguarding processes and understand the impact on them
  • Tools and models you can use, including how tools used in mainstream safeguarding work might be adapted

Speaker:

Sarah Goff, development manager – safeguarding disabled children services, Ann Craft Trust
