Motivational interviewing in practice

10/13/2020 14:00 - 15:00

Motivational interviewing is an approach to conversations and communication that supports people to make changes in behaviour. It can be used in a variety of settings relevant to social work, whether working with a parent who wants to stop their drug use, or even with older adults in residential care.

In this practical, pre-recorded session:

  • David Wilkins will talk about the uses of motivational interviewing in social work with children and families.
  • Lydia Guthrie will talk about how motivational interviewing can be used when working with adults.
  • David and Lydia will then demonstrate how motivational interviewing can work in practice through a ‘real-play’ scenario.
  • David and Lydia will be available online to answer questions through the chat function.
