Supporting older people using attachment-informed approaches

11:30 - 12:45

The significance of attachment theory for older people can be overlooked. However, its relevance is evident in the experiences of many older people who face the challenges of adapting to new ways of living and changes in their family and social networks.

This session will draw upon speaker Lydia Guthrie and Imogen Blood’s 2018 book, Supporting Older People Using Attachment-Informed and Strengths-Based Approaches, to cover:

  • How an enhanced understanding of attachment theory can empower social care staff and improve the care and support of older people
  • How attachment theory can help to support relationship-based practice with older people
  • How attachment theory can help social care staff to work effectively with the wider family and social systems
