Working with disguised compliance and resistance

14:15 - 15:15

To be effective, children’s social workers must build positive working relationships with families. Building such relationships requires seeing beyond the immediate presenting behaviours and working with the person ‘behind the mask’ to build rapport, gain trust and demonstrate empathy.

In this performance, Geese Theatre Company will explore these issues and provide you with an opportunity to reflect on how you encounter and deal with people who, on the surface, may not want your support, by addressing the following questions:

  • What is being resisted and how does resistance manifest itself?
  • What impact does resistant behaviour have on social workers?
  • What strategies can social workers use when confronted by resistance and disguised compliance?
